Operafest 2024 Lisboa & Oeiras: A Festival of Tradition and Vanguardism
Operafest 2024 Lisboa & Oeiras, led by soprano Catarina Molder and produced by Ópera do Castelo, returns with an expanded program in new venues, promising an exciting and accessible opera experience for everyone. This year, the festival aims to double its audience by offering a diverse range of performances in both Lisboa and Oeiras, including the magnificent Gardens of Palácio Marquês de Pombal and the Open-air Amphitheatre at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
The festival’s programming is rich and varied, showcasing both great classics and contemporary works. Audiences can look forward to performances of Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" and Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" in Oeiras, as well as Mozart's "Don Giovanni" in Lisbon. For younger opera enthusiasts, Isabelle Aboulker's opera tale "Little Thumb" will be featured. The Maratona Ópera XXI will host workshops, New Libretto Awards, and conferences, fostering new talents and ideas in the opera world. Additionally, the festival will present the world premiere of "Torment", based on Canto V of "Lusiads" by Luíz Vaz de Camões, and an operatic rave at Titanic sur mer. Cine-Opera screenings at Cinemateca Portuguesa will further enrich the festival’s offerings.
This year's theme, "Basic Instinct," explores human attraction to extreme situations and the brink of total destruction. The festival also celebrates the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luíz Vaz de Camões, Portugal's greatest cultural figure, with a cantata performance titled "Torment". This focus on heritage is complemented by the festival's innovative and inclusive approach, combining traditional and avant-garde elements to highlight Portuguese talent and provide a contemporary take on opera.
Operafest 2024's dates for the great classics are August 22, 24, and 26 in Oeiras, and August 30, 31, September 2, and 4 in Lisbon. The Audience of the Future performances will take place from August 28 to 31 in Oeiras, while the Maratona Ópera XXI events are scheduled for September 5 and 6 in Lisbon. The operatic rave will be held on September 7 in Lisbon, with Cine-Opera screenings running from September 7 to 11.
With its rich and varied program, Operafest 2024 promises to be a compelling and engaging festival, inviting audiences to explore both timeless classics and innovative new works in the world of opera.
